Our Story

Our Story

Grove Avenue Baptist Church began out of prayer services conducted in the Sydney community by University of Richmond students in 1854. On May 3, 1868, with 32 charter members and a lay pastor, Sydney Baptist Church was formed. In the late 1800’s the church’s name and location changed twice: in 1883 to West Main Baptist Church, and in 1889 to Grove Avenue Baptist Church. In 1977 the church moved to its current location at 8701 Ridge Road.

On January 13, 1952 God led Grove to begin a weekly television broadcast that is today the longest-running Christian program in America. “The Victory Hour” is a live broadcast of our Sunday morning (11:00 AM) worship service on NBC-12 and streamed on the internet at groveave.tv.

Over the years, locations have changed, names have changed, means of communication have changed, but one thing remained constant – the desire to be a people following Jesus to make disciples of the changing generations coming up and the nations coming in.

Our mission is more important now than ever before. There are an estimated 1.2 million people in Greater Richmond, of which the overwhelming majority remains unconnected to God and His church. Our mission is to see the disconnected become disciples who make disciples resulting in believers who multiply churches locally and globally. This was Jesus’ plan all along. (Matt. 28:18-20) So why not come join us in following Jesus… to transform generations and nations!

Our Network

Although we exist as an autonomous congregation, we understand the power of connecting and cooperating with other gospel-centered churches and organizations. To that end, we are part of a nation-wide network of over 46,000 churches called the Southern Baptist Convention. Together we do some amazing things. For example, our network supports over 4,000 missionaries who are sharing the love and message of Jesus globally. We work together to plant new churches in cities across the U.S., operate the second largest disaster relief organization in North America, and have created seminaries to train new generations of leaders for churches around the world. We are excited about the power of partnering with this network and others. They exponentially increase the impact of our church.
